Internally there's effectively only THREE skill levels for all intents and purposes. Originally, Doom only shipped with four difficulty levels (Nightmare was added via Patch 1.2), and If we want to get REALLY technical, there's two things that need to be clarified. Do we have any information on this? Who is correct? Which difficulty is the “normal”, default experience of the game? But this page on says that “Bring it On” is the default difficulty. This would make “I Own Doom” (the first option within the ‘harder’ category) the default or equivalent to HMP. So which skill level of the 4 is the default one, or the equivalent to Hurt me Plenty? According to most people on reddit, and a single gameFAQs post I saw, the skill levels are the same as the classic games, just with the omission of “Nightmare”. Doom 64 only has 2 difficulty categories: easier, and harder each has 2 options. In those games, there are 3 difficulty categories: easy, normal, and hard, with 2 difficulties in the easy category and 2 in the hard category. In Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom, “Hurt me Plenty” is the default difficulty, the one that the base game is initially developed for, with the other difficulties either adding or subtracting items/enemies in order to make things easier or harder. Doom 64 only has 4 difficulty, or skill, levels, instead of the usual 5. I have been trying to figure this out for a while now.
